Fuel Filler Neck Inside Wheel Arch

Recommended Posts

Mac210882

Hi Guys,

I've just come back from the 'ring and my enthusiastic cornering speeds have resulted in the rear drivers side wheel fouling on the petrol tank filler hose that runs down inside the wheel arch to the petrol tank.

I noticed this when I'd stopped to put in 5 Euros of fuel and found 3 Euros worth all over my shoes :D

My rear beam is lowered quite significantly, although it wasn't a problem on my other 205 which was also lowered. Has anyone else seen or heard of this problem before?

It's a plastic hose, which is why it has rubbed all the way through, so I was thinking about taking it off and getting a local fabricator to replicate it in metal, before bolting it all back together agan. It won't stop the problem of it fouling the wheel, but it may last a little longer....

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Iain

how low is it?? :D

I've head of rally cars flicking debris and breaking them, which is why many rally prep companies do a guard, but never a tyre actually rubbing on the pipe!

you may have worn out mounting bushes, do you know the history of it?

Rear beam was rebuilt with Grp N mounts about a year or so ago. This is a pic of the car that shows how low it is, don't think it's too extreme though :D :

Where can I get a guard from?

Your rear bump stop missing on that side per-chance? If it is, and the car running a lowered 205 beam, then that's your problem.

when i stripped mine down i noticed that the tube was starting to get wear on it. But it only ever rubbed when i had a car load, which was about 4 times in its life hehe

Could be... I'll jack it up and check at the weekend. That would explain it

Had this happen on my old 205 at least a few times!!! I think it is down to a missing bumpstop. A bit of a pain in the ass to replace, if you do it make sure you either sort your bumpstops or at least raise your car a bit!

I know of someone that drilled through his when fitting a cage, but I won't say his name to spare his blushes :D

Cheers to everyone who responded. I jacked the car up today and sure enough the bumpstop is missing off the arm on the drivers side! ;)

I've ordered a new pair from ebay, I might as well replace both whilst I'm under there, seems like a relatively simple job, providing the old bolt comes out ok.... although it does look a bit rusty <_<

If anyone has a spare fuel filler neck lying around, please let me know as I need one ASAP

i'm wondering how the bump stops will affect you handling? assuming that the beam will be resting/hitting on the bump tops quite often will it not be dangerous? i didn't have bump stops on my car for a while and i could hear the tyres scrapping during hard cornering/ bumps but that was just on the road. i've never had a chance to drive the car hard with the bump stops fitted so don't know whether they give progressive and controlled stop or not. just a thought.

They look to be quite 'pointy' so will hopefully give a progressive stop rather than just slamming against a rubber block. It was only really catching going at 50mph through the Karusell, which if you haven't seen it, is quite a... 'severe' corner, if that's the right word to use :)
