Which Cars To Decaptitate? (i.e. Remove The Head, Boom Boom)

Recommended Posts

Casanova

My uncle has a trusty BX with a 1.7 TD XU in it. The cambelt snapped, but since he's just spent lots getting it MOT'd, he wants to fix it. What heads would be compatible? Would one from a 1.9 TD fit? They seem more common. I assume it has to be a turbo head.

All advice appreciated, cheers :D

just put a 1.9 TD engine in it, far easier than fixing the old donk as they tend to bend the camshaft when they snap belts as the cam only has 3 bearings.

the old 1.7 engine is very rare nowadays, even the 1.8 is dissapearing! tons of cheap 1.9's available just avoid the DHY engine code as they love throwing rods.

OK, my uncle has been hassling me for progress on this. Anyone? I got a couple of useful PMs before but nothing came of them unfortunately. We're not really in a position to change the engine - he just wants to whack another head on it. Looking for a complete head including cam etc just to swap with as little dismantling as possible. The cam from the old engine is in three pieces on the old engine so I can't really tell if its bent or not... :(

Anyway, the original question - will a 1.9 head fit? They are obviously more easily available. Or does it have to be another 1.7 TD head, an exact match? How do the 1.7 & 1.9 differ - by bore, stroke or both?

Cheers

their exactly the same engine when their turbocharged, 1769cc.

im sure the 1.9diesel heads are the same as the 1.8 but i cant be 100% sure. have you tried to locate a head from a 405 1.8 td? they are much more common in the case of the 405.

Is the engine the same as a K reg 205 turbo diesel - does any one know ? I think it's 1700 but I'll check.

If so I have one sat in the garage on a pallet and the head has had a recon sometime not so long ago in its 110,000 mile history . Will pull the head off if you want to buy it. It ran superb and has had new glow plugs recently as two of them packed up so I put four new ones in..

I checked the displacement of the BX on rac.co.uk and it came out as 1769cc. So it must be that pugger is right, and the 1.7/1.8 thing is just a badging policy - I guess maybe they chose 1.7 for the BX since they also had 1.9s and wanted to differentiate?

Anyway, that helps. Will keep looking! Cheers for the replies.
