Mi16 Thrust Bearing Onto 1.9 Gear Fork?

Recommended Posts

craig f90

Ive done a search, but cant find the answer. i went to fit the mi16 thrust bearing supplied with the new clutch to my 1.9 be3 box and it didnt fit the fork. do i modify the fork or do i get a new 1.9 bearing? will this be okay to use? im converting the car from a 1.6 to a 2.0 8v turbo.

thankyou, craig.

Miles

All the Mi16 clutches run the same release bearing (BE1 and BE3) so it's got to fit any BE3 8v gearbox unless it's a late type with the pull clutch then you need to change the cross shaft (Arm)

Sorry, i mean ive tried fitting a 405 1.9 mi16 release bearing (valeo) to a 205 1.9 gearbox but the release bearing wont clip to the 205's clutch fork/shaft. It seems the fork is too big for the release bearing so it wont clip securely and im really concerned it will move or even fall off.

How do i tell the differences from the push an pull type gear boxes? (i really am rubbish at mechanical projects)

pull type the release bearing is part of the clutch so if if the clutch doesnt have a big black bearing on its a push type.

I think what miles is saying is that the release bearing is the same for a push type mi16 and a push type 1.9 gti so therefore it should fit the arm if the bearing is right. (which is how i understood it)

Sorry about that guys. tried it again today went straight on.

Yes your right about the bearings, i went to the main dealer as when i offered th MI16 one up to the 1.9 fork it seemed too big. He brought out a 1.9 bearing and that was exactly the same as mine. He also checked the forks and they were the same too. It just takes a little bit of fiddling with the bearing to get it to hold onto the fork. Thanks for your help miles and bud. I hope this will help someone too.

Me

Er, noob question: what happens if the release bearing comes off the fork when the car is driven? I ask this because removing my gearbox a couple of weeks ago and I dont remember removing the bearing from the fork/arm, that is, I think it just slid straight off the shaft when I had the gearbox on the ground..? Could this be why the clutch was really heavy even after changing the cable...? gearboxes are not my forte!

I'm pretty sure you can look inside the box via the clutch inspection hole and see whats going on!

It won't because in normal service the release bearing is held tight against the clutch diaphragm spring. The clips on the release bearing are only there to hold it in place during installation.

A heavy clutch is a knackered clutch :D A good clutch should be as light as a feather. I've just replaced the clutch in my 205D because it was heavy and snatchy and now it is beautifully light. The old one was a pattern AP one and I replaced it with an OEM Valeo.
