Project 205 (djs 2nd) (car Wont Start)

Recommended Posts

Ok i have picked up my second 205 now, a G reg 1.9 in white, needs a lot doing but has electric sunroof etc and full enclosure alarm as a bonus.

Anyway my first major problem i have is the car wont start , the guy i brought it of said the battery was knackered so we bump started it and i drove it back. Anyhow i have charged the battery , i turn the key and all i hear is the fuel pump prime, i get lights etc , but the starter motor dosent even seem to turn. When i get chance i am going to take a look and work out how to get to the starter motor, guessing its either dead or cable corroded as the car has been sat, any advice ? , or is there any common problems it could be , just to list a few more things that need doing, the rear beam is dead , the engine is very lumpy below 4k but i think this is down to timing, i will get through all the problems anyway and get the baby back on the road

Electric sunroof? Is it just a tilty uppy downy one as opposed to a slidey backy forthy one?

Will it not start at all ever? If it was just the once then it could have been the starter stuck. Otherwise it could be dead, or it could be bad wiring, the classic brown multiplug for instance.

If you can run a wire from the + side of the battery to the small spade on the back of the starter motor, you should get the solenoid click in and start turning. If no joy when ever i have changed one i have dropped it out the bottom but it can be a bit awkward.I find shouting and swearing seams to help.

nah electric sunroof is a normal sliding one but i do need a new gear on the starter as its worn but that is for another day. As for the starter so far i have not managed to get it to turn at all but like i say going to take a look at the wiring and see what it looks like. There it quite a few niggly problems with it but i will just plough through them

last time i changed my starter i had to take the inlet fanimold off

well thats what the staines manual instructed me to do (what a ball ache that was)

if you do take it off, dont put the wrong inlet gasket on like i did

i put the one for a carbed engine on and it ran like crap for months and i didnt know why

it was one of the main reasons for me taking the old girl off the road

and there she has stood for about 2 and a 1/2 years

only found out the other week when i took the engine out

Yer. i followed the haynes a couple of times and removed the inlet manfold off, but that was mainly down to my old car being a bit on the short side after a fight with a wall (bottom of the sump would hit the rad  ) After getting a new slightly longer car i found i could the starter motor out by the alternator along the bottom of inlet manifold, happy days

Ok had a play today, i ran a lead from positive on the battery straight to the spade connector on the starter motor and surely enough it did after a little go turn over and i got it to start, i then traced the cable to the brown multi plug where the connection was green so cleaned it up which kind of did the trick. The reason i say kind of is that after tuning the ignition on and off around 10 times the starter motor would kick in and start the car. However after sucessfully starting the car around 5 times the starter motor got stuck on and the car kept turning over even with the ignition turned off, it did this for about 30 seconds before killing the already poor state battery.

further more i am needless to say i placed a order tonight for

STARTER MOTOR

SPARK PLUGS

HT LEADS

INLET MANIFOLD GASKET
