Mi16 Idle Problems

Recommended Posts

I did a search and found some other topics but this seems to differ slightly from the normal symptoms.

On startup my Mi seems to pick a random rev to idle at. It has always done it to a degree but much more so lately. Recently one of the AFM plug wires frayed and snapped off so I soldered a repalcement plug on with all connections being strong at at the weekend.

On starting it will sometimes idle between 1k and 1.5k revs other it goes up to 2.5k and sits there roaring. Blip the throttle and nothing happens. 4-5 minutes driving and sometimes it will settle back down others it wont. Also soon after starting sitting in traffic it might suddenly just start creeping up of its own accord. Sometimes blipping the throttle will bring it back down others it wont. No ECU fault light shows so everything 'appears' to be ok.

It went to 2k+ the other day so before going anywhere I popped the bonnet and wiggled things, forcing the TB shut more (the adjust screw is as far out as it will go) it seemed to go back down a bit but immediately climbed again when I let go. I unplugged the ICV and it idled perfectly at 1k revs, ICV back in and it climbs to 2k+ again. Drove off and within 2 minutes at the lights it was idling fine again but when stopping it will arbitrarily pick anywhere between 1k and 1.6k revs to idle.

It just seems too random to be a sticky TB, I will take it out and thoroughly clean it all tonight and see if anything is obviously wrong with it. Also got a spare ICV somewhere so might try that too.

Any other ideas?

Also it seems to be a bit spluttery on idle like it's firing on 3 but it isn't, no unburnt fuel out of the exhaust and give it some beans and it sounds fine, only a little chuggy on idle.

I have another ECU to try as well

Sounds exactly like a worn throttle body to me, I've seen loads like that now.
