When You Can't Afford Bilstein

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine wants some suspension for his 106 and he's a little tight with his money. Now i've been saying that a set of Bilstein sprintline dampers should be on his shopping list but he's insistant you can get as good a suspension for less (or get coilovers for the same price)

When budget is a concern is there a budget damper manufacturer that stands out from the rest for the right reasons??

Koni or AVO? I've had both and whilst the Konis were a little on the stiff side, the AVO fronts were ok, the rears werent very good at all. Cheap but you gets what you pays for. Tell him to wait a bit longer and save up to get some Bilstein Tarmac Spec GrpN dampers (forget the Sprintlines)

I though the Bilstein Sprintline is good all round, and Streetline are just OE, with the backs being a little softer than OE? (ie Sprintline is fine)

Spending out for the proper Bilstein Sport/Sprint rears makes sense, because they are Monotube. Monotube's are effective at any angle, but Twintubes (all the other makes and streetlines basically) only work properly near vertical.

Having just fitted a full set of the GP N Challenge Spec Bilstein I would suggest he fits then as they are the best suspension I've had on any car . Stiff as fook so good over jumps & cornering but they just seem to soak up smaller bbumps & ruts .

The GP N front bilsteins for the 106 are cheaper as I think you only have to buy the insert & not the whole shock .
