Fluctuating Oil Pressure

Recommended Posts

GLPoomobile

I've just posted a topic in General Car chat about my wonderful journey home from Edinburgh and my buggered bottom end (engine, not my arse :) ).

In summary, my oil pressure guage was all over the place tonight. Driving at a steady speed on the motorway it was up and down like a whore's knickers, and everywhere in between. Sometimes going up and down smoothly, sometimes just dropping in an instant. As I don't have a working warning light, and I knew I had a loose connector on the pressure sender (amongst other factors, so don't bother telling me I'm a twat for driving it, thanks very much) I now have a death rattle.

So the only things I can think of are either the crank bolt is not tight enough and not driving the pump properly, or there is crap in the guaze on the pump pickup causing a blockage. Is there anything else I should check to find the cause?

I know there was a topic not long ago about checking the bearings and crank for damage, so I'll search for that to refresh my memory and once I've whipped the sump off etc I'll take some pictures for the experts on here to assess the damage.

Cheers

A realyl, really, really f***ed off Steve :)

The death rattle suggests there is something serious going on, but it might be worth checking the wiring just to rule it out. After seeing your other topic i had redid mine, as it wasn't working before. It seems odd that you occasionally have good pressure - i would have thought that it would be consistantly low if something nasty had happened.

Not sure how yours is wired, but the brown plug was playing up in my car so i've just bypassed all that for now.

I would have said multiplug too. The rattle may be something else (fingers crossed is is a loose bolt!)

Before you go taking any sumps off etc. You need to do the following: (either way, it'll have to/should get done).

Check the torque on the crank pulley bolt. Don't just do it FT, its designed not to be, but tight. So in future it can be cracked off. Can't remember the exact Nm off the top of my head, but the joke book will help.

Go Peugeot, and buy a new sender. Worth while having on a Mi anyway, and at least it can be rulled out.

Go buy some proper crimps, and get hold of a proper calibrated crimping tool. Not just a halfords chocolate one. They'll soon break, and be back to square one and piss you off even more.

Fix that oil pressure warning light! Again, just need a little bit of patience and make a decent connection, and it'll never go wrong :)

Also throw that multiplug in the bin, just another thing to give you hastle. Thats if Des still keep them when they do they're looms. Or if in dought give it a proper clean.

These bits is what makes a crap un relaible conversion to a proper one :)

I totally agree with everything you have just said. Fortunately I have known working pressure senders and switches so I can swap them, and was going to make sure the wiring was OK to. So yes I probably will do this before inspecting the bearings and crank.

I also agree that the from the symptoms it would be unlikely to be dodgy pressure, as it was up and down really quickly, more like the connection to the sender was cutting in and out.

But, it just seems such a coincidence that I've now got a knock from the bottom end. I know for fact it wasn't there before, and it's not the gearbox. Combine that with my track record for bad luck and I just can't help fearing the worst.

I'm managing to keep pretty calm about it though, but still really pissed off. Probably more to do with the fact that this is the first time I've had 0% faith in a car, and it's by far the most expensive car I've bought, and was supposed to be 'not a project'. Yeah, right :)

As said check the wiring first as it does seem a bit suspect, especially as the pressure was steady after you put the wire back on, then started acting up after you booted it back onto the motorway.

Looking at your other topic, if it is the bottom end then id suspect main bearings, seeing as the gauge goes mad under load. Coincidentally im about to get a 205 in with exactly the same problem, bottom end knocking under load, pressure gauge going up and down constantly.

was supposed to be 'not a project'. Yeah, right
