Missing Studs?

Recommended Posts

jtek

i was under my car today putting a bearing seal back in on a driveshaft that had popped out and i noticed that under the exhaust manifold, there were only two of what seems to be four studs holding the manifold on. the two centre studs were holding the manifold on from underneath while the two outer studs are missing. i tried to put a screw into the missing stud holes and it hit a blank point, giving me the impression that the studs have been broken off (something i had hear of happening before) so are there definitely meant to be studs there? also as a point the exhaust manifold has been been blowing slightly, and the gasket was on the list of stuff to do, but am i really up the creek with this? i can't imagine getting the studs out will be simple at all. all the studs on the top side are intact and holding the manifold on.

cheers (the car is a standard 1.6 with standard manifold)

Miles

It's quite common for them to fall out or snap off when some one with heavy hands does them up,

If they have snaped off you might be able to get a angle drill in there and drill and hole for a easy-out if not the head needs to come off to do it, but I;ve always managed with some swearing to get them out in place.
