skinner2k3 3 Posted July 20, 2007 Whilst under the car with the engine running looking for the latest oil leak I was able to hear a medium rattle. I know medium rattle sounds stupid but its not a heavy knocking nor a light metalic noise. I can imagine if you were to put a nut in the sump and "rattle" it, it would make this noise. I put the car in gear and with the handbrake on put some load on the engine to try and make it knock and it didnt. Its just this damn constant rattle. I have not had the sump off to check as I wouldnt know what I was looking for. Any suggestions? Cheers
Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted July 20, 2007 loose oil pump chain is possible, play in end float?
skinner2k3 3 Posted July 20, 2007 loose oil pump chain is possible, play in end float? Sorry for being a bit thick, but what would fixing that involve? Engine/gearbox internals are the only bits I havent got involved in before. Thanks Ben
Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted July 20, 2007 if its a loose chain its just a case of adding a spacer plate to the oil pump (4 bolts with sump off), if its end float then you will need new thrust washers for the crank. this mean measuring the amount of end float and ordering them accordingly. Often best left to someone with experience as its quite precise and can do a lot of damage if done wrongly.

Might just keep my eye out for a 1900 engine for sale.
luggy 13 Posted July 20, 2007 Can you hear the rattle when sitting in the car at idle? does it reduce as the engine gets warmer or is it constant?,
skinner2k3 3 Posted July 20, 2007 Deffinately hear it on idle. Yes I suppose it does quiten down a bit once warm. Not sure how bad it is when rev'd will get the misses to rev it whilst I have a listen. I would guess it was constant. Got a couple of track sessions at combe coming up, really dont want to have to be dragged of the circuit!
luggy 13 Posted July 20, 2007 My 1.9 is similar, its quite rattly when first started when you stand outside the car with the bonnet down, not noticeable sitting in the car, it does quieten down when she warms up. It could possibly be as Richie said the oil pump chain. Im curently looking for any excuse to do my Mi16 conversion but she's running really well and when it comes to engines Im a great believer of "if it aint broken dont fix it". Got a couple of track sessions at combe coming up If your that concerned about it breaking down on the track get it sorted before hand.
skinner2k3 3 Posted July 20, 2007 The car is road legal so I willl put a few miles on the clock and see how it goes. Combe is not until September so if it hasnt gone by then hopefully it will last a track session or two. I will let it warm up tonight and have a better listen. tom_m 0 Posted July 20, 2007 mines always had an odd intermittent death rattle at idle, not sure about load or at full chat tho, zorst is too loud to hear it i always put it down to the power steering pump, but i got rid of it recently and the rattle is still there since the oil pressure is fine i've decided its the oil pump chain
