Edd-XS 0 Posted July 19, 2007 Ive had my Mi for a couple of months now, and all is finally going well! Except that it sounds supercharged lol With little and no throttle, there is a rather loud 'whistling' sound, as soon as throttle is applied, it goes. Its got worse over the past couple of weeks as its finished being run in (done nearly 2k in it now) and one of the mechanics at work reckons its an air leak. When I push down on the inlet manifold, the noise seems to drop in pitch, but so also, do the revs? Is this because the excess of air getting in is being stopped, causing the revs to drop? How do I diagnose where its coming from? It sounds like the top right hand side of the rocker cover! Any ideas? Edd
C_W 3 1 Cars Posted July 19, 2007 The most likely cause of any airleak is either the inlet manifold gasket(s) or possibly one of the oil breather pipes is split (they often split on the induction pipe).
Edd-XS 0 Posted July 19, 2007 My oil breather is just venting to air at the mo, and is not connected to the intake side at all. Its been fine like this so I dont think this would be causing it? Inlet manifold is my thinking... Will have to have a play at the weekend lol Cheers mate! Edd
M_R_205 5 1 Cars Posted July 19, 2007 my 8valve used to whistle out of the airfilter when i had a big piper x thing fitted, a couple of mates recond it was just the noise of the engine running not being muffled by the new filter so it was more noticable? i may be talking bollox though, tbh yours spounds nore like an air leak, give all the bolts on the inlet manifold a quater turn or fit a new one see if that helps
ablister 31 Posted July 20, 2007 if you spray wd40 or similar around gaskets, you can sometimes find air leaks as the engine will rev (the spray fueling the engine)

V8Pete 0 Posted July 22, 2007 My 8v lets out a bit of a shriek under load between about 1000 and 2000 rpm.
Edd-XS 0 Posted July 22, 2007 Lol its amazing what 5 minuts of investigation can show up... About 5 of the manifold bolts had almost fallen out altogether! God knows how Id never noticed before! A slight 'chirp' still erupting from the open breather set-up but at least it doesnt make me wanna jump out and kick the bollocks out of it! haha Know, to sort the random 'clunk' sound coming from the front under heavy acceleration and braking... Thanks guys! Edd
M_R_205 5 1 Cars Posted July 22, 2007 glad to hear you got it sorted, after finaly connecting the servo pipe up on my new carb set up, theres a screaming noise coming from it a well high piched one too, but that for a new thread if i cant find it tomorrow morning.....
