Henry Yorke 269 3 Cars Posted July 18, 2007 As you may know my CTI has some 406 SRI bits on it. However since turboing, the oil pressure gauge has always read a little low, about vertical on the gauge on cold and the second bar whilst running. The way the oil feeds the turbo is from the oil temp gauge sender (the green one on the left on the front of the block) with a T piece adapter on it. This means that the gauge will read low as some of the oil feeds off to the turbo before it reaches the sender. The turbo has a large diameter drain pipe fitted back to the sump as you should not run pressurised oil through a turbo or it will blow the seals. There is a smaller pipe fitted as the feed to the turbo, so there is not too much flow, thus starving the rest of the engine. When I removed the sump for the oil return pipe union to be welded on, I toold the opportunity to replace all the shells and the crank was good. I did buy the XU10 / Group A oil spring for fitting to the oil pump, but was advised that turbos don't like massive oil pressure so I didn't fit it. Driving back from the FCS, I saw the gauge dropping to the first bar, however I could get it to read at 2 bar periodically at the same revs later, which made me think it may have been an electrical gremlin as no stop light was coming on. Oil temp was low as it usually is in my skip (alloy finned sump - no oil cooler, but the gauge does work as it rises when thrashed!). The map on it isn't perfect for the car so it does run slightly rich at high revs so technically the oil may bet polluted with fuel over time, so I changed the oil (Millers 10/40 XSS - I usually use this on 205's), cleaned up the contact on the sender and regained some pressure. Searches on here revealed: http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/index.php?showtopic=42733 The senders often fail http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/index.php?showtopic=27579 Zero oil pressure in the turbo and the T off is fine http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/index.php?showtopic=22587 An unanswered pressure question from M3 Evo I am thinking of putting an regulator in the oil feed in a bid to increase the rest of the engine oil pressure. Alternatively it could be just electrical. What pressure is a turbo meant ot have oil fed to it at? I have just rung www.turbocharger-solutions.co.uk and they said 40 psi!!!!! Should I fit the uprated spring?
jackherer 543 Posted July 18, 2007 I'd start by fitting a proper gauge with its own sender. Sandy309 recommended SPA ones so I got a couple of them, they have low pressure alarms too which is handy.
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted July 18, 2007 I know the XU10J2TE run the std XU10 oil pump spring 6 bar (From memory when doing mine) along with a very small Dia drive wheel, But again from memory the oil pressure on the one I have was about normal onthe guage not that means much by 205 standards, The uprated spring's are longer but not sure of the tension which makes the differance. Henry Yorke 269 3 Cars Posted July 18, 2007 Sounds like i ought to fit the spring then and perhaps a reducer on the turbo feed. My brothers 205's always seem to have monster oil pressure Gerben ran one of these on his 205 Turbo Not sure where to get the regulator and gauge from in the UK. any ideas? 309PUG 2 1 Cars Posted July 19, 2007 Henry, You can get the bits your after from any Hydraulic / Pneumatic wholesalers, I have found Carlton Hydraulics in Rotherham (very near Peugeot Dealer) to be very reasonable. Take your pipes or have definate sizes, tell them what you want to do and they will have it. Chris
Henry Yorke 269 3 Cars Posted July 19, 2007 I think Pirtek do them as well. I just have to take the hose off to find out the thread and diameter! Then i run the risk of starving the turbo of oil. Dammed if I do, dammed if I don't! How does the oil flow in the XU10J2TE? Is it a split system?
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted July 19, 2007 The oil feed for the turbo is taken from the oil pressure low take off nearest the gearbox end, thru a solid metal pipe then into the turbo, Drain goes into the skirt of the block not the sump.
Henry Yorke 269 3 Cars Posted July 20, 2007 Is this oil feed accessible on an XU9 engine? I presume it is a thin pipe to restrict the oil flow? Any idea of the diameter?
tom_m 0 Posted July 20, 2007 the gauges/senders have also been know to read low when attached to t-pieces. just to muddy the waters further
Henry Yorke 269 3 Cars Posted July 20, 2007 yeah mine has read low for a while but has just dropped a bit lower than usual recently
tom_m 0 Posted July 20, 2007 the feed miles is talking about doesn't exist on the xu9 block. its usually blocked off or has an reduntant stop light in on the nasp xu10 engines.
Henry Yorke 269 3 Cars Posted July 20, 2007 Pah, so I will stick with my T piece then! In theory if i get one of the pipes above, i can effectively adjust the flow to the turbo and it will have an effect on the oil pressure in the car
James_R 3 Posted July 21, 2007 Think as said, get a proper gauge, I'm keen on the mocal mechanical ones, £30 from think auto then you know what the pressure is for sure.
