Changing Cambelt

Hi

 

I am planning to change the cambelt, water pump and tensions etc on my new Mi engine which is yet to be installed in the car.

 

Having never done this before I dont want to f*** it and the engine up.

 

Is is worth leaving it to a garage or shall I have a go myself..? I have all the tools but no torque renches. What sort of things must I be aware of?

best off getting a haynes manual mate!

 

the Mi16 has 2 belt tensioners, so its important to get it right, or the cam timing will be out.

It's easy enough if you've got smallish hands, but there's not a huge amount of space down the side of the engine and getting to one of the tensioners can be tricky. Otherwise it's all straight forward - turn the engine over by hand a couple of times and ensure all the timing holes line up exactly after you've done the belt and tensioners, and bobs your uncle.

 

I suspect the 405/BX Haynes jokebook probably explains the process fairly well (it does for 8v engines anyhow)

With the engine been out of the car it makes it a whole lot easier, just have a go your self and like anthony said, time it up, turn it over by hand and if the wholes in the sprockets dont match up just do it again untill you get it right. You will need a torque wrench for doing up the w.pump bolts and the tensioner bolts.

the holes in the pulleys line up with holes in the head/block. Just slide something of similar diamter through such as a drill bit or bolt etc. If you lock them off using the timing holes before removing the old belt its very difficult to get it wrong IMHO.

If you dont have one allready get yourself a haynes work shop manual....well worth the money and everthing, well allmost is in there. A cambelt change etc is very well explaind in it.

The exhaust & Inlet cam pulleys ahve holes (~8mm iirc) for the timing pins to fit thorugh & ~6mm holes in the head.

 

Downpipe to manifold bolts are good enough & don't allow much room for error.

 

I'll make a pdf of the relevant pages from the BX or 405 manual at work tonight & post it up tomorrow.

Yes, just the tensioner by the number 3 is different on the S16 and the cambelt is 134 tooth,

It's a easy job in the 306 as there's loads of room
