GazRallye 0 Posted July 17, 2007 Anyone who has ever had a knackered bottom ball joint will know the feeling, when weight is transfered to one side during cornering the bottom ball joint has movement, giving the wheel on that side a mind of its own, which can result in some hairy moments. I'm having a similar kind of feeling when cornering on RH bends, it only comes into play when the car is being pushed a little. The car has had 2 new wishbones with bushes, 2 new driveshafts and new track rod ends within the last month so that rules out these. I've jacked each corner up and given each wheel a wiggle to check for play and they all seem fine. The rear beam does sound rather creaky, but this isn't noticeable on the move, just when jacking the car up or when rocking the car when stationary, however it does sit evenly Its an XS and has done 125k miles
Anthony 1,003 Posted July 17, 2007 Check the hub isn't ovalled where the wishbone balljoint is clamped - that'll give similar issues to a failed balljoint, and if it's only on right hand bends, I'd check the left hand hub.
t16ryan 1 Posted July 17, 2007 check the rear wheels are sitting straight sounds like possible rear beam fault
GazRallye 0 Posted July 18, 2007 When I had the track rod ends done it was tracked up and now steers in a straight line, in that respect its transformed the car. I will check the front wheels again and give the ball joint a bit of stick with a pry bar and see if it moves, its been suggested it could be the top mount bearings, how can I check these? Is it normal for the rear suspension so sound a bit creaky? Obviously something like this can be hard to put your finger on exactly what the cause is, especially when you can't see or drive the car first hand, I appreciate the input guys
jackherer 543 Posted July 18, 2007 Is it normal for the rear suspension so sound a bit creaky? No, thats an expensive sound See T16Ryans post above ^^
GazRallye 0 Posted July 18, 2007 I kind of suspected the beam was at deaths door, the ride is rather crashy even though its on standard ride height and shocks, its like this on the front too, that and the car is getting for 18 years old
