Help, My 205 Will Not Start :(

Recommended Posts

zowow

i noticed a couple of days ago that my key was getting a little stiff if i put it on the starter...

yesterday the battery light came on and the electric windows and stereo would not operate, i turned the key on and off whilst moving and everything went back to normal....(i.e. windows, stereo etc)

now the car will not start at all. When I hold it on the starter it does nothing and the battery light comes on, sometimes the starter might click once (as if the battery is dead, but most of the time nothing)

if i bump start it it fires up straight away, and i still get the same problem....

any ideas, tried to include all the info but some of it might not be relevent. sure its electrical rather than a mechanical prob with the starter.. any ideas?

Im having an intermittant staring problem on mine curretly. New starter motor 12 months ago, with the earth going through the brown multiplug bypassed directly to the starter solenoid with a shielded spade connector about 50cm from the solenoid connection. So if she doesnt start from they key pop the bonnet disconnect the spade connector and touch the solenoid side of the spade to + of the battery. If she doesnt start its a problem with either the solenoid or the starter, if she does, which mine does, then it probably means you need a new ignition barrel. PS make sure it not in gear :D

Sounds like a mixture of a faulty alternator, or alternator wiring, and either a duff starter or duff starter wiring.

I would whip off the main +ve feed from the battery to the aternator and starter and see what condition it is in, then check the wires running through the brown multiplug to the alternator warning light and the starter solenoid.

What voltage are you getting off the battery?

i'm not sure on the voltage, but everything else seems to work ok....

will try and check tonight. Like i said the barrel was acting a bit fishy, but i cant see why the starter would click and i would get a battery light if this was the problem was with this...

the battery light lit up and when i tapped the brakes, the dials would go back to 0 until i released the brake, temp, pressure etc.. the windows and stereo stopped working... as soon as i turned the key of and on quickly the problem was resolved - 100% normal

directlty after was when i could not get it to start :D

sounds like something s*it is going on witht he igniton barrel, is the key stiff on every click, possibly try a dab of wd40 or similar in there but not too much due to the switches, also check the earth under the dash hasnt come lose or fallen off, unlikely but worth a look...

had the same problem on mine, i wired in a relay to the starter solenoid so now i have a push button starter :)

hmm, well i took the whole thing apart today and tried disconnecting the spade connector and wiring it directly to the battery and still nothing!

so i think i've narrowed it down to either not enough juice (alternator or battery)

or possibly a knackered starter motor.. will be suprised if its that though..

Mine had bad intermittent starter problems, so I just fitted a 40a relay into the starter circuit and it works every single time now :)

Details are in the Emerald loom link in my sig - it shows a start button although I never bothered fitting that, just added the relay.

If turning the key is stiff (like you say) I personally think you can rule out the starter & focus your attention on the ignition barrel.
