quagmire 0 Posted July 15, 2007 My car has a misfire when idling and I cant figure it out. Rotor arm, dizzy cap, spark plug, HT leads, filters have all been changed. The exhaust is new and has no leaks and the car still pulls like a train. I recently made a mistake with the air flow meter while trying to retrack the carbon. I undid the wrong bolt and the black cog in the AFM span back pretty much all the way. I went to a so called "professional" who deals with this sort of thing specially but said he couldnt get to idle with out a misfire below 1200 rpm. And told me it was due to the fact I was using unleaded petrol and the car is designed to run on 4 star. (I use super unleaded) Could my air flow meter just be fubard after the mishap? hd_andy 2 Posted July 16, 2007 Certainly sounds like it, as the ignition side is all new.
DamirGTI 342 Posted July 16, 2007 Hi ! Sorry i don't understand this so good - did you touch a little phillips screw inside , the middle of the AFM wiper arm ? (it's sealed/protected with a some sort of glue around ..) or you have scratch the black carbon track ? or you have play with spring tension (black toothed wheel..) ? If you unscrew that phillips screw you will loose standard AFM-s angular calibration , and I've heard (from the Bosch mechanic guy..) that this can be a little tricky/hard to set back and yes this can really be a problem if you move wiper arm angle and not only on idle .. Cheers Damir
GLPoomobile 958 Posted July 16, 2007 And told me it was due to the fact I was using unleaded petrol and the car is designed to run on 4 star. (I use super unleaded) What a true professional Gives up trying to fix the problem and comes up with some other bulls*it excuse to hide his ineptitude If Damir is correct, and I suspect he is, then I'd just get a second hand AFM. Plenty floating about for not much money, although you can't gaurantee quality. I'm sure if you get one off a member then you should have a reasonable chance of getting a useable one. DamirGTI 342 Posted July 16, 2007 EDIT : or if you loose toothed wheel position try this : remove the securing pin (well i don't know the right word for this in your language but it's a metal ting-wire/pin which blocks/keeps toothed wheel in position) completely then loose the wheel (or spring tension it's a same thing..) a little bit with your fingers until the wiper arm starts to goes/moves anticlockwise , then gently turn/tight the wheel back until wiper arm goes back clockwise to the end/staring point , temporary fit the securing pin and try to locate on which tooth the tip of the pin fits in (which tooth gets in center/in level with the pin tip when you move wiper arm back to the end - clockwise) when you move wiper arm from the middle to the end by turning the wheel , but you must do that very gently ! try a few times to be shuse on which tooth it stops .. Mark that tooth and then count 18 tooths from that firstly marked one as you tight the toothed wheel/spring tension clockwise and then refit and tight the pin on that ending tooth .. Well this is not so precise adjustment but I've try/test this on 4 different 1.9 engine AFM-s and they where all setted on the same amount of teethes 17 to 18 from when the wiper arm goes back to the starting point and i measure middle point at the pin tip and toothed wheel teeth.. Sorry but this is really difficulty for me to describe , but i hope that you will understand what i mean .. try that just for yourself and see if this idle improves (you can correct it later for fine tuning by turning tooth or two (but don't go more than two tooths on ether side) on the clockwise or anticlockwise side after you find this first starting point which you have loose before by mistake - listen to the engine and try to do/adjust that ) But rolling road is much safer option for that , this is just from my experience, DIY settings and experiments with AFM-s (one more note this works only for 1.9 AFM not for 1.6 item as the 1.6 AFM has different spring tension amount ..) ouch i tooks me 1 hour to write this !! quagmire 0 Posted July 16, 2007 He did change the position of the wiper arm, that coupled with the fact that the black toothed cog thingy slipped. I think trying to get it back to the right position might be tricky! I'll just get a second hand one. Since this guy f***ed about with it. I cant get it to idle smoothly no matter what I do with the AFM. It was kind of obvious he had given up with it.
