Mad Professor 7 Posted July 14, 2007 (edited) Hi All. My wasp in the sump seems to be getting more angry evey week, so I droped the sump off today to if there was any big problem, and the chain on the oil pump seems to have a fair bit of play to it. Can anyone tell me what sort of slack the chain is ment to have, I know it can't be to tight has it would get tighter as the engine get's hot. Even after driving the car for over an hour with the engine at idle you can very easy hear the angry wasp in the sump, So I think that the chain is just to loose. Thanks for your time. welshpug 1,657 Posted July 14, 2007 is the spacer/shim fitted under the oil pump?
B1ack_Mi16 67 Posted July 14, 2007 Maybe it's not got a thick enough oilpump spacer.
Mad Professor 7 Posted July 14, 2007 What size spacers can you get, I only know of two sizes from peugeot, 0.7mm and 1.1mm thick.
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted July 17, 2007 is the spacer/shim fitted under the oil pump? Not all the XU engine's have the spacer fitted. Peugeot modded the pump height from approximately April 1987 to include the spacer thickness, check the supplement section in the Haynes manual, its all in there. You need to know what pump you have fitted before you fit a spacer & put to much tension on the chain but I'd expect you don't need the spacer on yours. Graham. lagonda 42 Posted July 18, 2007 Must admit I was worried about the vast amount of flop in the chain on my 8v, but examination showed it wasn't wear. Apparently this amount of free play is necessary because of the amount of expansion once hot. Suggestion: the oil pump pick-up is pretty close to the bottom of the sump, the buzz could result from this fretting against the sump, especially if the sump is slightly dented.
