changingman 7 1 Cars Posted July 14, 2007 Hi all, i have an MI16 and randomly it just cuts out and will not start until it wants to. Let me explain. It does not have to have been running for a long while or even sitting for weeks,it just stops. It has only done it a few times in the 8 months ive had it but the last time it was out on track. There was no spark anywhere so i checked everything i could ,leads, fuses, earths, just about everything i could physically see to get to. Now when i died at oulton park the other week it took me 2 hours to get it going again,as i said i checked all i could(bearing in mind im no mechanic!!) i even pulled out ans swapped all the realays(not fule though as even i know that wouldnt stop it sparking!!) Just when i had given up all hope of getting it going and was just about to throw it on the truck and come home i spotted 2 green 12v relays underneath the front light on the drivers side so i took them out wd40`d them and put them back. Now maybe it was coincidence ,i dont know, but it started first turn and ran all day without a murmur. I am taking it to Cadwell Park on monday and am a bit concerned that whatever it is will happen again and that is not good for business so i am having to take a spare car just in case so i dont lose the customer. I would be very greatful if any body has experienced anything similar and how they sorted it out!! Thanks Liam www.trackdayuk.co.uk
Anthony 1,003 Posted July 14, 2007 Those two relays by the drivers light are probably the ECU power relay and the fuel pump relay - that's usually where they land up on most Mi16 conversions that I've seen - the picture of yours above looks the same, judging from the loom heading in that direction. Chances are the relay is just knackered from being exposed - stick another relay on and check that the contacts are clean, and see how it goes.

Cheers Anthony, that makes sense mate,it seems too much of a coincidence that i clean them and it fired up straight away. I thought the fuel pump relay was black though or is that just on 205 gti engines??? I feel like being brave now and just taking the MI on its own and leave the gti6 at home!! C_W 3 1 Cars Posted July 15, 2007 I had 2 years of intermittent problems from one of those relays that sits in the fusebox on the drivers side inner wing on the Mi16 loom. It would cut out for an instant whilst driving over bumps but carry on and it would cut out a lot of track then restart after I'd waggled the wires about. For some reason I didn't think it was the relays because they all seemed to click on ignition and the car never failed to start and otherwise ran fine; it would just cut out from time to time so I though it was a break inside the wire or something. It wasn't until it cut out driving onto the Eurotunnel to the Ring that I finally fixed the problem. Was a bit panicky at first as normally it would restart after a few waggles but it didn't, and all that cranking was starting to drain the battery. Luckily Pugtorque had a spare with him, swapped it and it's been fine since!! I can't remember which one of the two it was though Are you at Cadwell tomorrow?
