205 Rear Beam Advice

Recommended Posts

aitchy

As i have the mot coming up, i put my 1.9 gti in to get things fixed, the problems were

pads

horn

sheared front wheelnut

the body was sitting lower on the offside rear compared to nearside rear ( it has been lowered atouch at the rear) , hard to explain but when u go over a bump you can hear a faint knocking.

so after talking to the garage, the horns fine, and the sheared wheel nut is flush with the hub :D

as for the rear, he said my torsion bar bushes were done, and that replacing these only might not help on a car this age, and i need a new or 2nd hand axle which im pressuming is the rear beam. he said that would take a few days to source, and i even said if i get the parts and pay you for labour which he was fine with.

what i need to know is what you think regarding the rear and the garages reply as i have not used them before thanks

The garage sound like they know what they're talking about. If you plan on keeping the car for any length of time get a second hand beam and fit new bearings or buy a reconditioned beam and have that fitted.

Whatever happens id go for a reconditioned unit. Any secondhand GTI beam nowdays will be showing signs of age and wear, and you probably start having much the same problem in the not too distant future. Your only hope for a secondhand unit is to use the beam tube and shafts from a late base model beam (they seem to be less prone to wear, probably due to not having a hard life!), then attach all the GTI stuff to it. I picked an immaculate beam tube and set of trailing arms up from the scrappy a couple of weeks back, from an automatic 205, for £40. Indeed the bearings were so good it was almost a shame to knck them out and replace!

As for people to recondition your beam, i dont know anyone up your way that does it. Obviously if you were further down south id offer my services, but i think thats stretching things a bit too far! Budget around £300 for a completely reconditioned beam aswell. ;)
