Coolant Leak...please Help!

Recommended Posts

fulani

Ever since I span it at Castle Combe, my 1.9 has been leaking coolant, getting progressively worse. I haven't fixed it as I'm getting my new engine fitted by Miles soon, but now I need the car to get me to work for a couple of days.

The water leak seems to be coming from the driver's side of the engine, from a little unit near the alternator belt pulley thingy. I could see it a lot better if I took the driver's side wheel off (and the plastic shroud between the arch and the engine bay), but the wheel nuts appear to have been tightened by the Incredible Hulk on a bad day.

Any ideas what it could be? I managed to bend the jacking point trying to jack the bloody thing up to get a better look at it. If anyone has a picture of that side of the engine I could probably point out what it is. Looks to be a component rather than a hose, after I just spent £3.99 on a hose repair kit. Arses.

it sounds like the water distribution block on the rear of the engine is leaking. it maybe that its cracked or that the seal between it and the block has failed.

It looks more like the side of the block really. I was looking for a picture in the Haynes Manual, but they seemed to have stopped doing those annotated pictures... :D

if its on the side then its 95% going to be the water pump.

if its the side of the block the only thing there is the water pump, but you wouldnt be able to see that as its behind the cambelt covers.

That was the thing that had popped off then. It's not overheating when driving, so I assume it's still pumping, just maybe the seal is gone?

yeah, theres a gasket on the pump, its probably leaking from that. i drove my 205 around for a while with it leaking, just kept topping it up. if your having a new engine fitted i wouldnt worry too much about it.

depends how soon its being replaced, if its leaking then its any time now till it could fail (water can get round the shaft when they fail too) rendering the while engine scrap if it goes!
