Tom_Fowler 0 Posted July 11, 2007 I am looking for a front brake setup for my new rally car I am building. It is a gti6 engined 205 gti gravel car with weld in cage etc. Basically I'm after a front brake setup for it that will fit inside 15 inch 1.9 wheels for sure and maybe 14's as well. I am very interested in some forest Alcons but have not yet found any. Any ideas would be great? Cheers Tom
lee-bg 0 Posted July 13, 2007 (edited) Why dont you put the GTI-6 brake setup ? For sure they are very nice on that car. A lot of people have done that conversion and seem to like it. They 'bite' very well at high speed and even at low. I did it recently on a Mi16 and its marvelous. 283 mm discs. But forget the 14" wheels, only 15" and not every 15" will fit. number2301 1 1 Cars Posted July 14, 2007 Can't you get Wilwood 4 pots for that kind of money?
tom_m 0 Posted July 14, 2007 you can do better than wilwoods
Tom_Fowler 0 Posted July 14, 2007 I have been chatting with a friend today who was very impressed with the 307 HDI 110 setup with 26mm wide discs? Any thoughts? And anybody know where I could hold of the calipers? Cheers Tom
Guest martinj Posted July 15, 2007 Hi, You might want to see if you can track down a set of second hand 106 GTi cup brakes, they were designed to fit under 14 inch rims. Martin
B1ack_Mi16 67 Posted July 15, 2007 Hi, You might want to see if you can track down a set of second hand 106 GTi cup brakes, they were designed to fit under 14 inch rims. Martin Find the right rims and I'm sure the 283mm 307 setup will fit under 14". My 15" PTS wheels will take 315mm discs with the Hi-Spec 4-pot calipers I have, although the caliper brackets are only made for 300mm discs, which in turn probably is big enough
jonnie205 1 Posted July 15, 2007 I would run 206 super cup alcon 4 pots, these are a very very good calliper and will bolt straight on to 1.9 hubs, finding these second hand wont be easy but a new kit from pts is roughly £700 the cast iron gti6 stuff is ok but very heavy
Tom_Fowler 0 Posted July 15, 2007 Hi John hows things? The super cup setup is ideally what I want but I have been looking out for some for a while now with no luck and cant afford to get a new kit. So was thinking of the 307 setup as a cheap alternative until I can some really? U must have a set hiding in your workshop from the super cup days lol! SPGTi 2 Posted July 16, 2007 I found the 307 Hdi / 206 180 brake setup terrible on the loose. No feel and would lock up way too easily (and adds lots more unspung weight) . The std setup with good pads, good fluid and braided lines works much better IMHO. Steve
205wrc 16 Posted July 22, 2007 This is what I've been playing about with for the last few nights. Commonly known as the AP "Forest" caliper, these are off a Mk2 Escort, and they bolt straight on ! I had a spare 1.6 Gti hub which I clamped in the vice and a spare disc from the scrap pile (also a 1.6 Gti). The caliper fitted straight on to the hub, but it could do with moving in slightly closer to the centre as there is room between the bottom of the caliper and the centre of the disc, and the pads overlap the outside edge of the disc by about 3mm. The best bit about them is that they fit under a 14" wheel, as I tried a 405 GTX alloy and a Revolution RFX over them. The 405 rubbed ever so slightly, but it won't be a problem if the caliper is moved in. The calipers are alloy, very light and strong but they come with a hefty price tag...........£500+ each new but there are a few used ones to be found from Escort rally car specialistssuch as West Wales Rally Spares or the Squires twins - Competition And Rally Spares etc at a fraction of the new price. Green Machine 3 Posted July 22, 2007 The alcon setup is not bad, we have them on our rally car, but the discs crack easy and they are not cheap to replace. Also i recommend castrol SRF brake fluid as well
