Any Tips When Lowering The Front End?

Recommended Posts

DanS1982

I've never replaced springs on any car before let alone a 205 so was looking for some handy tips to do so. I have some spring clamps which I'm told will help alot but is there anything specific to the 205 (1.9 GTI) to look out for when doing the job? Any special tools required?

Cheers,

Dan

Just take your time, do it methodically, and it'll all be clear!

best to have new macpherson bearings to hand as well as they are pretty chep and usually fall to pieces when you dissasmble the current strut assembly.

The shocks have been replaced fairly recently (by previous owner) so hopefuly wont need to replace anything. Thanks for the list of tools!

Put a container under where the driveshaft enters the diff.

Tie the hub carrier to a high point on the inner arch to stop forementioned driveshaft falling out accidently and pissing out gearbox oil. :)

and have a mate there to help you pull the shock out of the hub carrier cos they can be a pain in the arse :)

Job done! Only problem I had was undoing to top nut on the strut to release the spring, had to use an air gun to get it off!

Going to do the brakes next............ but i'm having the same problem with the main hub nut (35mm) it doesn't want to budge!

Try getting a massive piece of iron bar and use that as a lever on your wrench - we used an old water pipe form a mates farm which was about 9ft long and cracked the hub nuts straight away :)
