Yet Another Annoying Beam Refurb Post

Recommended Posts

johnnyboy666

right this is my first beam rebuild so bare with me, on the guide on the main site, it says to remove the arb use a ford wheel bolt or m12 bolt, firstly can anybody enlighten me as to which fords actually have bolts rather than nuts, and secondly what else can i use (and dont say a rear caliper bolt cos i have drums on both my beams) i went to a hardware shop and got a m12 bolt but apparently the threads are different( i had naively assumed they were all a standard thread) luckily i noticed this just boefore getting to the point of no return and stripping the thread so that was a bit of a close one, if anybody can shed some light on the situation it would be much appreciated

thanks

johnny

Front caliper bolt will suffice as well (indeed 1.6 front caliper bolts are the same as 1.9 rear caliper bolts)

turns out i didnt have work so ive dismantled the rest of the beam, the one trailing arm shaft came out an absolute treat and looks as if it was refurbed yesterday, the other side however, which was the reason for refurbing the beam in the first place has almost no sign of an outer bearing ever being there! there is a little bit of corrosion, where the bearing wouldve sat, and the rest of the shaft is as new, the question now is, if i sand down the corrosion will the shaft be ok to re-use or will this result in premature failure?

A picture paints a thousand words as they say, but generally speaking, any corroded shaft I'll consign straight to the bin whenever I refurb beams.

i'll try and get a picture later if i can, but i'll assume the worst, where can i find a replacement shaft then and at what sort of cost?

They're £55+VAT new from Peugeot, or strip some 205/306/309/ZX beams down in the scrappy

hmm i do have another beam which has no signs of failure as yet but its the one on my car and i would have to have the car off the road for a bit (as im not the fastest of workers) is there any guarantee that the shafts will be ok if the beam shows no signs of creaking/seizing etc? if not it'll be down the scrappy, ive heard mention of zx trailing arms having different camber, would that mean i'd need to get both of them to avoid wonkyness?

sorry for all the q's

thanks again

john

Btw, GSF now do the trailing arm shaft for buttons. Or as Anthony points out, a scrapyard :)
