How Many Turbo Mi16 On Stock Pistons

Recommended Posts

Bally

Just want to know what are the limits of the standard pistons cause i am at the cross roads right now where i am either going to rebuild my Mi16 back with throttle bodies etc and run it NA or go back up turbo on std pistons or use 1.9 8 valve pistons and rods. Cant justify paying 400 + pounds for pistons especially now where our currency exchange rate is 4-1 meaning 1600+ dollars of my money.

So help me make a choice here.

I have been running it turbo up to 8 psi non intercooled so far and the pistons look great still with intake temps of over 90 degress but with very limited timing. I have full management and a permanent wideband in the car.

If i go the turbo route again i will have the intercooler fitted.

Unless someone can get me a set of forged pistons for cheap here are my chopices

NA - high compression, nos, kent cams,

Turbo std Mi16 pistons and thicker cometic gaskets

Turbo with cutdown 1.9 8 valve pistons

The std. pistons will be fine provided you keep the boost under 10psi and lower the CR. The easiest way to lower the CR is use XU9J4Z pistons which are 9.5:1. Failing that, just turn down the tops of your XU9J4 pistons, as that's all Peugeot did to make the low compression pistons, which have a compression height of 36.28mm, compared to 37.12mm for the high comp. pistons.

Going less than 36.00mm might be flirting with danger as the crown will be getting too thin.
