Car Takes A Long Time To Start And Misfires

Recommended Posts

Guest SeanGTI

hi there!

there is a problem with my 1.6 GTi

i was driving it last night and all of a sudden it started running on 3 maybe 2 cylinders!!!

the king lead was broke so i got a new one and put it on.

i go to start the car then it dosen't start then there was a stink of petrol!!!

after trying to start the car for 10 mins it finally fires but it only runs on 2 or 3 cylinders!!!

the car runs but badly and you have to keep the engine above 2000 rpm or it stalls.

my guess was the timing belt has slipped a tooth or two.

plus it takes a long time to start. it sounds like a diesel starting from cold. trys to catch then it dosen't

i really think the timing belt has slipped.

what do you think???

Could you have a bust ECU temp sensor, this causes the engine to BADLY over fuel as the ECU thinks engine temp is -40C or so!

Could be the earth wire... Mine did the same as yours and it was the earth wire getting loose from the gearbox housing... Hope it helps

just to clarify, i have problems when trying to start with the afm disconnected so i'm using the accelerator to keep it going, if i don't it will die, like your experiance above.

Could you have done anything to cause an air leak? If idle is screwed but normal running is OK then you could be looking at an air leak into the inlet manifold. Often cuased by missing the screw that holds the oil filler on. This bolt goes straight through and can cause a hard to find air leak.

did you only replace king lead? Id be tempted to do all the leads and check all plugs are sparking.

after all. the timing belt did slip!!!! bent a few valves. but i had a fairly new reconditioned 1.9 gti head lying around and put that on. problem sorted. goes a little bit quicker as well!!!!

if you have been trying to start it for 10 mins the plugs will be soaked in fuel

you need to clean them or change them before you try again

edit: too late!
