Man3 0 Posted July 4, 2007 Hi, I have a problem with selecting 5th. I've had it since i built the car a couple of years ago, it used to happen infrequently but now happens all the time. It will always shift into 5th but you have to force it slightly as if the clutch isn't quite depressed fully and with this comes a slight grinding noise. If you dip the clutch and let the revs drop a bit then there's no problem at all. The clutch is correctly adjusted as far as i can tell (i may be wrong though). All the other gears are fine, and the fluid is at the correct level and i always keep it quite fresh. The gear rods have probably seen better days to be honest and i was going to replace them but i want to find out if there are any other possible causes whilst i'm in the process of sorting it out. I've got an MI16 conversion running a 1.9 box with a 1.6 final drive. I built the box myself from a 1.9 with 60k miles on it and was working fine, and the final drive came from a 1.6 with quite a few miles on it that was also functioning properly and as such i don't think its anything internally wrong as if i'd reassembled the box incorrectly there would be major problems. The only thing i can think of that could be causing a problem inside the box is that pesky magnetic disc, i think it went back in the place it came from but seeing as it can kind of just float around, who knows! Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted July 4, 2007 Take the end tin cover off and check that the rivit's on the hub are still in place as it's quite common for them to fall apart leaving 5th selection difficult/impossible, Easy to fix thou as it's just a case of un-doing the input shaft nut and removing 5th gear assy and replacing with a good one
Man3 0 Posted July 4, 2007 Thanks Miles, I'll get the cover off and check it out in a few days.
