driversdomainuk 8 Posted July 2, 2007 Hi This new Mi16 engine I have bought has got a knife edge crank, along with forged pistions/rods and all balanced. Has anyone had experiences of sucha crank and what are the advantages/disadvantages of them, bearing in mind I will be using the car for hillclimbs. thanks
309PUG 2 1 Cars Posted July 2, 2007 Hi This new Mi16 engine I have bought has got a knife edge crank, along with forged pistions/rods and all balanced. Has anyone had experiences of sucha crank and what are the advantages/disadvantages of them, bearing in mind I will be using the car for hillclimbs. thanks I think all that 'knife edge' means is that it is lighter ie the lobes of the crank are ground down to something like a knife edge shape and then balanced, advantages are that their is less internal mass of the engine. James_R 3 Posted July 2, 2007 Also mean to "slice" throw the oil better that's whipped up on the crank so less drag. But it's all theory, long as it works that's the main thing.
Mandic 0 Posted July 2, 2007 Webs and with them weight are there for a purpose. Removing them in order to lower rotational inetria or to make crank more aero/hydro-dynamical is a big no-no. On race prepared engine where all other internal bits went on diet this can be done, but agian, not by much. Get Your self a windage tray and isolate oil from crank if You are concerned about windage losses and crank hitting oil. And as for lightning, go for lighter flywheel. besides, do a search, has been covered already. Cheers Ziga
Dom9 2 Posted July 3, 2007 Yeah, whatever happened to that Mark chap who was doing all that work to his crank etc... I seem to remember a rather heated debated about it all, but I think that was literally years ago now!
