The engine and gearbox need to be separated to gain access to the clutch. I suppose it could be possible to pull them apart just enough to fit a clutch but I doubt it, and it would be more hassle than removing the gearbox. I thought taking the gearbox off would be difficult but it really isn't, the only hard part I found was shifting the driver side driveshaft out of the way.
