Steering Racks

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at renewing my steering rack, and fancy one of these quick conversion kits. I know most say just get another p/steering rack but I've tried a few now and all of them felt sloppy. Would like something that feels tight.

Looking at the WMMS conversion kit and the bronze bush that they insist you should get alongwith, although Shenpar (Reputable Pug tuner) sell a complete rack for £125.

Any experiences in these from anyone?

I don't know why but my PAS rack felt sloppy off centre too without the power assistance fitted even though there was no detectable play with it off the car (I put my old rack on after the PAS one melted a bit in a fire and it seems a little better just off-centre).

Is the one from Shenpar as quickrack kit? (just the rack and pinion)? There are small bronze bushes at the end of the rack body/tube that the rack slides through.

I think the answer to the "sloppy" feel is on this page. Under rotary valve see the "torsion bar".

I'm pretty certain that this is also why you are not supposed to use a power steering rack without and power attached as you are putting much more force through this torsion bar that you would with the power attached. This snaps and you loose steering...

I have had a little clunking noise when playing with the steering left/right around the 12 o'clock position and it turned out to be the worn spherical joint on the lower part of the steering column I think (as far as I understood with my limited french). Also the hydraulic part that assists to move the rack (what's it called in english btw?) had a worn bush. Have changed them both now and the steering feels great again, in fact it has never been so tight ever since I had PAS fitted.

I had a WMMS quick rack on my 205 challenge car for 2 years of rallying without a problem. I was very happy with rack until I broke it on a rock that turned out to be attached to the centre of the earth via Cumbria.

Thanks Rob,

Think I might convert my manual rack then. At least it has lowish miles on it and the boots/rods are in good fettle.

Off to spend more money then...... :D
