Rebuilding Gearbox Help Please

Recommended Posts

First of all - my tale of woe and foolishness:-

The gearbox in my 205 has started making some horrendous noises of late, and as a change of fluid made no difference I decided something requiring a little more effort was required - and now the Galant is back on the road i could afford to take the 205 off it. Like all good peugeot enthusiats, I had another BE3 box lying under the work bench out of my 2.0 8 valve 405. The plan was to remove old box; swap external links and bolts over; fit spare box. However, whilst swapping over the arm that controls the left/right movement of the gearstick i accidently unclipped it internally (though I didn't know this at the time). Feeling somewhat fearless after my sucess with the rebuild of my Mitsubishi gearbox I decided to split the thing apart in order to see what I'd done. Having done this it was all very obvious, and I now know I could have sorted it out by just whipping the diff assembly out (good old hindsight).

And now to my dilema. How the frig do I go about engaging the selectors together when I put the box back together??? From what I can see, I need to lift the reverse gear "up" away from the bell housing in order to get the actual gearbox partially in, then lower it; then push the main selector in and across to move the selector mechanism to the side of the selector forks on the gearbox side - but it's not quite happening. I am assuming the old manual tells you how to do this, and also if there's anything else I need to be aware of with regards to the input shaft bearing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated - i currently have several bits of gearboxx lying around the garage!!!

Cheers for that - very useful.

However, let's assume that the person who spilt the gearbox apart did it a different way wihout removing the selectors at the top under the top cover, and simply split the gearbox.........
