Dodgy Speedo

Ok i've just changed my gearbox and since then the speedo has been really odd. Sometimes its fine, rock steady and all, the next minute...nothing, i'm going along at 70 and it says i'm doing 0.

Now its a bit funny that it suddenly comes on and off which makes me think the cable is fine. Obviously the 'box is suspect but then i heard a noise in the dash to start with, a fluttering kind of noise that varied with speed, like the cable twisting and hitting somthing each time round. Could it just suddenly come loose inside the dash and be so random in either working or not working?

I can't be bothered to replace the cable as i'm going to the 'ring on monday. Anyone thats taken the dash apart guess at why it would make a fluttering noise in there?

Cheers,

Lewis

@a guess lewis it maybe the lug has broken off the speedo cable mounting into the back

of the clocks or the plastic square pin that goes into the speedo drive is knackered and fluttering

or even the cog drive into the 'box is faulty? Replace that first maybe as it will be easier than clocks

out and cable change.

you may have pulled the inner and it might not be fully engaging in the clock. fir the effort i'd take the binnacle off and have a look.

Ok i'll confess to something which might explain brians theory. I put the cable back in the gearbox once i'd changed it and it didn't want to go in too well so i shoved it in. I then had to take it out and it was quite hard to pull it out so i just kept tugging til it came out. This pulling, combined with the fluttering in the dash points toward the clocks end.

Although having said that (why is nothing simple) i've just been for another drive and the speedo worked for about 20 mins then suddenly stopped with no fluttering at any point...the car would have just been getting warm at this point and it seems that every time i get in after not driving for a few hours it works for 20 mins....temp related?
