Washer Motor Bug

Recommended Posts

Ok so basically i am gunna put my 205 through an MOT tomorrow, and one of the issues that i know it will fail on is the front washer motor. when i bought the car a few months back, i was told by the previous owner that the motor was croaked and he had removed it. i swiftly bought another second hand one off of ebay for pence, and fitted it. it never worked, due to a mess of available wires and me not putting enough effort in at the time, and today i made the effort to sort it. i went through the following issues and sorted them

-tested the motor on a 12v battery, it worked fine, whirred away like mad

-cleaned connections thoroughly as they were corroded on the motor

-crimped on all new spade connectors on the suspect wires

-found the suspect wires, measured voltage with multimeter, 4v when barrel is clicked on, 12v when stalk is pulled back to wash position

-found and tested other wires in case they were suitable

after all of these tests, i had still had no washer motor, even though the motor works alone, and the wiring makes sense. another big point to make is when the motor was connected up to the suspect wires, and the stalk pulled back, the wipers also did not work, when disconnected, they worked fine.

anybody got any ideas? i have shown a picture below of the situation in the engine bay, and the two wires at the far right (white and green ground) are the 'suspect wires'

thanx, any suggestions would be much appreciated, i am not far from hard wire a big ol' switch into the dash and being done with it, but thats the girly way out lol

The stalks do play up (try and pull the stork back then wiggle it up and down a bit) it's like the get a dead spot on them.

must be a stalk issue, you should see no volts when its off, 4v indicates a voltage short elsewhere when its switched off.

I've had a very similar problem, just taken the stalk out, and apart, 3 metal tabs holding it together, cleaned up all the contacts and greased, and hey presto, working again!

cool, cheers everyone, i will have a look at it tomorrow, unlikely i can get an MOT until tuesday at the earliest now, so i have some time to try and get hold of a new(er) stalk if this one has expired, but i shall have a go at cleaning it up first
