skinner2k3 3 Posted June 29, 2007 Is the nut on the top of the front damper metric? 20mm doesnt seem to fit and 21mm is a bit sloppy! I take it you need a deep ring spanner to get in there whilst stopping the rod spinning with an allen key? Cheers Ben
Pugnut 9 1 Cars Posted June 29, 2007 from memory i'm pretty sure its m14 x 1.5mm (metric fine)
welshpug 1,657 Posted June 29, 2007 its french! it will be metric, and yes a deep ring spanner is whats needed, as well as a 7mm allen key. another way to do it is to stick a windy gun on them with the car on its wheels just to loosen the nut off.
tom_m 0 Posted June 29, 2007 i've got a deep swan necked 21mm spanner that i use on them
Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted June 29, 2007 sounds strange as all the ones Ive had have been 21 or 22mm, never had an inbetween one. If you get it off then Id get a replacement nut to save future hassle.
skinner2k3 3 Posted June 29, 2007 Cheers guys. Just need to try and find a 21&22mm combination deep ring spanner! All the ones I have found so far have been 20/22mm. Its been sat there soaking in WD40 for a day or two now so hopefully it should budge once I get the right tool.
Pugnut 9 1 Cars Posted June 29, 2007 i've used a deep socket before . use a set of stillsons or vice grips on the socket then you've still got a hole to get the allen key down.

GLPoomobile 958 Posted June 29, 2007 I couldn't find a 21mm swan neck spanner in any tool catalogues! Where can you get them from?
hengti 2 Posted June 29, 2007 i used to think they were called swan necked spanners until recently - they're actually called 'cranked' or 'offset' spanners; swan necked spanners are 's' shaped check out the online tool places or try ironmongers or even Halfords (they've got a reasonable-ish selection of tools these days)
Benito 0 Posted June 30, 2007 (edited) halfords! I bought the one from Halfords a while a go and it's c**p, the 21mm offset ring is not deep enough to get a good location on the Nut, as the bell housing gets in the way, so I ended up buying a 21x23mm from Draper which was a lot better:- http://www.draper.co.uk/Pages/Pagesource/p48.pdf If You don't want to buy the tool, just clamp up the shock strut with a mole grip (using lots of padding like an old rag or kitchen roll to protect it), and then just use a normal socket on the the nut. Works a treat. Edited June 30, 2007 by Benito
brianthemagical 1 Posted July 1, 2007 try and find a beta supplier. they have allsorts of stuff, most of the individual items i buy are from them. if you can get a catalogue theres loads of stuff in there (including a torque converter that can put out 7000ft.lb). skinner2k3 3 Posted July 2, 2007 (edited) I tried to put a deep socket on the nut with the allen key down through the middle, then turn the socket with a monkey wrench (think thats the name, the ones that tighten the more torque you put on?). All that achieved was to 1) twist the allen key and 2) jam the allen key in soo hard even a lump hammer wont free it. So I now have a damper with an allen key stuck in it and a socket stuck on the allen key. fcuk! Will try the mole grip technique, if that fails i am takeing an angle grinder to the damper rod and then putting it in a vice.
