ChrisG 0 Posted June 27, 2007 I want to clean up the piston crowns in my Mi block as the head is off and there is a fair bit of carbon on them, but as I am not stripping the bottom end down I was wondering if there was a way of doing this while they are in situ. Just a bit concerned about getting crap between the pistons and liners. Chris
Sandy 191 Posted June 27, 2007 Masking tape around the end and clean up with masking tape after, "tacking up" any deposits, turn the engine over by hand. Avoid compressed air, it just makes matters worse.
ALEX 98 1 Cars Posted June 28, 2007 Scrape the thick off and vac it up. Polish them with petrol
Owain1602 0 Posted June 28, 2007 If you have the means then some companies do rubber disks that you can put in a die grinder or drill but they wear down very quickly. They clean things spotless without creating any swarf or taking any material away, you can get a polished finish almost, very effective. I know Wurth do them because that what I have at work. boldy205 75 Posted June 30, 2007 if you have the head off make sure you clamp the liners down before you turn the engine over as you may disturb the liner seals if you dont. (If its an alloy block.)
newdean0 0 Posted July 1, 2007 I clamped the liners then turned the piston I was doing to TDC. I smeared grease into gap between the piston and the bore then used wire wool and a scraper to remove the carbon. When I was finished I moved the piston down the bore and wiped up the grease which had trapped the remaining carbon.
