Splatters Of Oil Back Of Engine Bay

Recommended Posts

Noticed that there's quite a lot of oil being splattered at the back of the engine bay on the right as you look at it anyone know of common reasons why this would be?

Is that where the dipstick tube meets the block?

if the seal is missing from the end of the dipstick handle, it could be blowing from there?

the distributor o ring can also leak, but can't see that actually spattering oil about

it does, anything from the dizzy seal, cam cover seal or cam end caps leaking oil drips down onto the drive shaft and it flicks all the oil back up everywhere

Hi Guys,

On my 205 Mi i have greasy oily spots on the sump at the back of the engine on the side of the cambelt.

Can somebody tell me what this pipe is (pic attached). this pipe and the gold connector go to back of sump, and the pipe seems to have fresh oil on it. My oil levels goes down very quickly so i defo have a leak somewhere, though there are no spots on the ground if parked for a while!

The picture is a funny angle but hope you can tell me what this is and how to rectify it!

Thanks

Spot on, I couldn't quite work out why there was oil all around the drive shaft area as the driveshaft oil seal isn't leaking so that would make a lot of sense.

I've visually inspected the cam cover gasket and end caps and they both look excellent as the cars had a top end rebuild fairly recently but I didn't think to look at dizzy stuff.

The dizzy has been on and off a number of times recently and I seem to remember that this oil has only appeared since then so this is now a prime suspect!

Hi Mickie,

Yep i thought it was for oil presure too, but why would it be greasy and have oil drop from the litte tube that leads to the gold connector?

Any help would be appreciated. I have cleaned the engine and am now driving it so i will see where the main leaking are is.

its definately got to be that then, same thing happened to me.. cant be the crank seal because thats on the end of the engine, bellhousing and oil from that cant get onto the driveshaft

maybe the pipes split? where it connects to the brass connector, have you not tried running the engine and having a look at the same time

That is a wire not a pipe, its the oil temperature sender & wire for the guage.

The oil must be leaking above there & running down the wire through the sheath so it looks like its a leaking pipe. Oil pressure sender is on the front of the block underneath the inlet manifold.

Thanks Graham,

So where on the engine is it likely to leak into the sheath of the wire?

I hope it isnt anything major.

Anywhere above the wire but its quite often the sheath is cracked due to age & heat as it runs over the gearbox under the dizzy & with the usual leaking dizzy seal it drips on to it.

If not, rocker cover is a possibility.

Graham.
