Very Bad Knocking When Turning Left With Power On

Recommended Posts

Scottieb

Hi all,

Has anyone ever experianced anything like this: when I turn left, with the power on, anything over 20 mph, I get a huge knocking noise and the car starts shaking. there is no shaking feeding back through the steering wheel though. its as if somthing is all of a sudden going totaly off balance. my gut feeling is the left hand drive shaft is the problem, as the right hand has been replaced with a new one. all the rest of the suspensoin is new, including bottom arms.

Any ideas?

Regards,

Scott

Cheers for that Luggy,

I'll try swapint the wheels round before i do anything drastic, but my money is on the driveshaft as this happend from about 20 mph upwards, and it sounds like someone is emtying an sack of housebrick into the passenger footwell. i'll let you know what happens.

ok, this saga continues, changed driveshaft passenger side (drivers side was replaced with a new one recently) changed gearbox last night but vibraton when turning left with power on or off is still there. (not as bad with power off)

If you put your foot on the clutch it goes away, so i though gearbox but i've replaced that and now i'm stumped.

Maybe a hub bearing but I cant feel any play in them?

A bit more information about this: if your doing say 50mph and turn gently left then you get a knocking fairly harsh but low freququency knock. Turn left hard at the same speed and you get a more vigferous knock at a much higher frequency. so what i'm saying is that the frequency of the knock is not related to the speed of the car, its how hard you turn in (left only)

the right hand drive shaft has been replaced and the bearing by the engine mount looks new too. right now my gut feeling is driveside hub bearing because this gets loaded up when your urn left.

What do you think?

HELP!!! :) its driving me to distraction and i have a track day on saturday....

its only the hub bearing if you have play in it when its jacked up

have you tried this?

jack it up and push/pull in the 12 oclock 6 oclock points of the wheel then try 3 and 9

FINALLY FIXED !!

Last night i changed the driverside drive shaft, and the driverside hub, and the noise is no more! i'm over the bloody moon and all ready for the woodbridge on saturday. Not sure which component was the problem but my moneys on the hub brearing.

(now i just have to do my other halfs car! :P )
