ORB 227 1 Cars Posted June 25, 2007 (edited) Went to the wreckers yard today for a poke about and to see what they had. I was about to go home when I saw this on the back of the wrecker coming in. So, i go see my mate there and ask whats going on with it. He said I can take anything but the wheels. So, ten mins later, I have the rear beam on the floor and handed over 20 quid. Did not pay much atention to it when I took it off, all I know is that when the beam was on the car it sat correctly and when i rocked the car, it seemed to be cool. So, I get the beam home, put it in the garage, and decide to actually look at it. Here is what I found. Looks different to my other ones? No Anti Roll Bar? The car was a 1.6 GTi in early trim Edited June 25, 2007 by ORB
welshpug 1,666 Posted June 25, 2007 no arb = base model beam, DOH!
Richie-Van-GTi 74 2 Cars Posted June 25, 2007 looks like either a standard base model beam or a 1.6 with arb removed. Guess at the latter though as inside the tube looks pretty clean as though ARB was in there until recently.
ORB 227 1 Cars Posted June 25, 2007 is there a way to find out for deffo? cheers Mr Van Man
welshpug 1,666 Posted June 25, 2007 measure the Torsion bars.
Richie-Van-GTi 74 2 Cars Posted June 25, 2007 all the arms are the same anywy, measure the diameter of the TB's and the beam tube. That way you can find out 100% what it is.
Jrod 7 Posted June 25, 2007 Try putting a 18mm spanner on the torsion bars, if it fits it's a base model beam. Also I thought GTI beams the tube had a bulge in the middle?
ORB 227 1 Cars Posted June 25, 2007 Yeah, just tried the 18mm spanner on the arb and it does not fit over. Also, although the pics dont show it, there is indeed a bulge in the beam tube. So, is it a GTi with the ARB removed? Whats your thoughts?
Jrod 7 Posted June 25, 2007 I assume you meant you tried the spanner on the torsion bars as there is no ARb... Maybe it once had an uprated item in and they took it out and never put the old one back in?
ORB 227 1 Cars Posted June 25, 2007 lol. you assume correct! So, GTi beam?
Jrod 7 Posted June 25, 2007 Seems it, can check the drums aswell as the gti has bigger drums, not sure of the actual sizes though.
ORB 227 1 Cars Posted June 25, 2007 just stripped it down, yes, its a 205 beam. Benn rebuilt somepoint in its live, I think that it has had new arms and bearings. Putting an ARB in it soon.
