pugbliss 0 Posted June 22, 2007 Hi finally gwetting round to changing the knacked calipers and discs on my 1.6gti... just wondered if anyone has any tips for me. also does anyone knoe what size the caliper bolts are? cheers
hengti 2 Posted June 22, 2007 pretty straightforward really; Haynes is handy first time round i'd recommend using a Gunsons Easibleed kit to bleed them afterwards though - the two man method is really boring and doesn't always seem to work. they're about £20 and are a doddle to use, providing you're very careful to ensure everything's sealed as you set it up
Baz 421 Posted June 22, 2007 Caliper bolts are 19mm. Copper grease is your friend!
pugbliss 0 Posted June 22, 2007 well i know everyone is gonna go mad with what im gonna do but im gonna bish bash bosh then on then get someone like quick fit to bleed them with there pressure bleed thingy they have.
davev 1 Posted June 22, 2007 how are you going to get it there? as you'll have no brakes if you change the calipers. to be honest bleeding the brakes is very easy, and the two man method isnt that bad and has always worked for me.
hengti 2 Posted June 22, 2007 ^can he be bothered, even, to do that though? pugbliss - if you already know what you're going to do, don't bother asking for people's advice? . don't muck about with your brakes. you need them to be able to stop.

westy 0 Posted June 23, 2007 Personally, I don't let anyone touch my brakes - the only way that I can be sure that they're done properly is doing them myself.

My advice, ditch the standard calipers and go for a pair of 306 GTi-6 calipers.Bolt straight on and you can probably source a pair on a certain internet auction site for under £100!!!Of course you need to upgrade the discs and pads too!!!!Cheapish but very effective mod!!!! Alex G 0 Posted June 23, 2007 i cant see how you wont have to bleed the brakes if you change the calipers. have a go yourself its so easy, just get a halfrauds manual or easy bleed kit.

d-9 0 Posted June 24, 2007 No, for any of the usual brake upgrades u'll need 1.9 hubs.
davev 1 Posted June 25, 2007 im not being funny here(thinking simplicity), but if your right next to the garage why dont you just give them the car and all the parts and tell them to fit them. should be an hour/hour and half labour max and you dont have any stresses to deal with. pugbliss 0 Posted June 26, 2007 cos i want the satisfaction of a job well done and also i dont want to pay for the labour when i can do it... all i want is them bleeding.
