Coilover And Eccentric Top Mount Set Up

Recommended Posts

Veero

Right I have done a search and didn't find anything conclusive. The link to Jon Murgie's set up was out of date.

Anyway I have just fitted a set of Bilstein tarmac insert coilovers to the front of my 205 along with a set of brand new compbrake eccentric top mounts. I have wound the lockrings up so it just pinches on the spring so when it's at the MOT on monday the springs wont come off their seats.

Everything has gone together fine, a quick spin round the block (probably on mismatched pressure tyres now I come to think of it) and it didn't feel great but it is bumpy as hell round our close so no great shakes.

Does anyone have any tips for setting up the location of the top mounts?

I gather the best compromise for general use is to have the set facing the inside of the car and angled slightly backwards towards the windscreen to give the best balance of extra camber without too much castor.

The car will be predominantly used on the road with as many track days as possible, it is not a daily driver.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

Veero

It' will be very bumpy at low speed, it smooths out at speed though.

From what I was told about the top mount aiming back and in towards the car so you get some castor and negative camber, if you use 309 arms you can aim them slightly further back to get more castor as the 309 arms will give camber as it is.

I used to use eccentric top mounts from Rally Design on my old rally car (now sold on). The downside is to increase negative camber you also dial off the castor. I used them turned in (strut top nut as close to the inner wing as possible) to give maximum negative camber (about 2deg with those mounts), then turned back out by two bolt holes. If that makes sense?!

With standard 205 wishbones, 1.9 hubs and shafts that gave between 1 and 1.5deg negative camber. Turn in was excellent, but it was a bit twitchy on narrow very bumpy tarmac at speed. To counter this I set the tracking to 1mm toe out. It worked really well and still use the same settings on the current car.

You might get away with parallel or standard toe on the track, my only experience on track is at Knockhill, but we were also using the perimeter roads, paddock and rallycross track, so I didn't experiment!

Hope that helps a little.

James.

P.s. By their nature they will be bumpy and a give a rougher ride, if you don't get on with it add in some helper springs. Have them on the current car and they do make a huge difference.
