Sad Question

Recommended Posts

dani959

Hi all,

I just refurbished my engine (and brakes, and suspension, and interior electrics, and so on, and so on) and I don't seem to be able to get the idle anywhere below 1300 RPM, even with the throttle in fully closed position and bypass bolt closed.

I suspect my SAD is knackered because if I block one of the SAD pipes I can get it to idle at 900-1000 RPM easily.

My question is:

Should the SAD block the airflow completely when the engine is hot? (meaning... it is definitely knackered?)

Yss, that sounds like the SAD is shot. When the engine's warm, if you pinch/block off the vacuum pipe going from the SAD to inlet and the rev's drop, it's sticking open. They should close when completly warm. So i'd say it's new SAD time

Mines the opposite, I have to keep the revs on for 20 seconds when the engine is cold after that it ideles around 1000 - 1100 Rpm. Think mines stuck in the off position.

It does seem that your SAD isn't closing, check the wiring to see it is getting a burst of 12v when you start the car, they don't get power for longer than that.

One loom I replaced earlier this year had a few broken wires & one of them was causing the same problem on that car.

Thats pretty normal for a 205 GTi on Jetronic.

Graham.

Just down below the dizzy. Take off the AFM and you will see the SAD. It has a hose on each end and an electrical connection. It is a circular device with a long tapering spigot on one end terminating in a black electrical socket.
