2052006 10 Posted June 20, 2007 In the middle of putting on a f/n/s driveshaft and am having a bit of difficulty getting each end in - should both joints move about? The second hand one that I'm putting on - only the inner joint seems to swivel - is this right?? On the one I've just taken off, both joints move about freely... Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted June 20, 2007 yes there should be movemnt at both ends, but only rotational and a bit of push and pull each way. there shouldnt be any sideways movement in the joints though. Hope that makes sense. If the outer joint is stuck then likelihood its FUBAR, Give it a tap and see if it frees off.
2052006 10 Posted June 20, 2007 I've managed to free it up, but clearly it was a bit seized. What's the best way of cleaning it up and do you need special grease to renew? Thanks for the help!
Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted June 20, 2007 pull the boot back, fill with fresh grease, resecure the boot, fit driveshaft and go for a drive.
2052006 10 Posted June 20, 2007 I've got some lithium grease which I used to use on mountain bike bearings - that do?!
Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted June 20, 2007 no, you want CV grease. I dont think lithium will take the heat as well. I may be wrong, long time since I was into bikes.
Ahl 4 Posted June 20, 2007 Both joints should move about freely! Sounds like there is something up with the outboard joint.
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted June 26, 2007 Bike lithium grease is no good for use in the CV joint but from what you've said if the outer hub end is already partially seized I wouldn't bother greasing it. Just get a replacement, I doubt it'll last long if you fit it. Graham.
kyepan 291 Posted June 27, 2007 Also had a replacement shaft with once ceased joint, it was the inner joint on the passenger side shaft. Once running it vibrated like hell, took it off, back and got a replacement.. It might be worth just taking it back, if its bought as a reconditioned shaft from a motofactors.
