huzzer 0 Posted June 18, 2007 I have a strange problem with my 2.0 Mi. The engine starts fine. It charges strong (high 13's) and the battery holds a good charge (high 12's) When the engine is hot however, the engine struggles to turn over. It gives the symptoms of a dead battery ie: if you keep cranking it will turn once then half then half then once etc. Only when its cooled down will it then start again fine. As some of you may know it started out as an alloy block 1.9 and had the same problem, its now a 2.0 block running 1.9 management so all the ancillaries are the same. I have swapped the starter over for another one, checked all earth straps, put jump cables on to the starter to earth it and to the +ve terminal to get full power to it but all to no avail. I have also removed the king lead from the coil to eliminate pre-ignition. Just to confirm, its when the engine is hot, not just warm. I am now out of ideas... Anybody experienced this before?? rapidmi 4 Posted June 18, 2007 my last mi used to do this and it was the crappy starter, i had a 19 gti starter on it and when the engine got hot (not just warm) and i switched op it would hardly kick over, i put an mi starter on it and it completely cleared the fault
t16ryan 1 Posted June 18, 2007 Yeah would also think starter, had one with a over tighetend alternator belt worth just re checking the tension, but sounds like lazy starter
huzzer 0 Posted June 18, 2007 Sounds promising, thanks rapidmi. Although i'm sure the first starter motor I had on was an original Mi, maybe it was just knackered. The one on there now is from a 1.6.
huzzer 0 Posted June 18, 2007 All votes for a duff starter then! thanks guys. am now searching for a decent starter motor!
Richie-Van-GTi 74 2 Cars Posted June 18, 2007 fit a 306 TD starter, easy to find in breakers and cheap as well. Will easy spin the engine over.
rapidmi 4 Posted June 18, 2007 fit a 306 TD starter, easy to find in breakers and cheap as well. Will easy spin the engine over. isnt the 306 td starter the same as an mi 1? i gpt ma mi starter for £50 new ave had it on 2 different engines since then and shes solid
pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted June 20, 2007 isnt the 306 td starter the same as an mi 1? No, the TD one will have a much higher torque due to the high compresion ratio of the diesel engine. Graham.
sorr 0 Posted June 20, 2007 Have you tried a jump lead between the starter solenoid terminal and the batery +ve? I ask this as I have a degraded cable between the ignition barrel and the starter solenoid and have all the same symptoms as you. Also changing this cable is much easier than the starter. leitoo 0 Posted June 26, 2007 Have you checked the ignition? Sometimes when the ignition is retarded you will have problems with hot starting... Sounds like you have a tired starter motor or tired batery but in fact is the timing that's wrong...
