Stupid Hex Bolt Won't Move

Recommended Posts

Atari Boy

Can anyone assist? I am trying to remove my drivers seat. Four of the five bolt come out quite easyily.

The last one though has been rounded my some muppet before me. I have tried to use a screw extractor but the bolt is made from some kind of brass coloured metal that is as hard as anything. Why? Three broken drill bits later and I am still no further forward.

Any tips or ideas?

File off the round on either side and put a spanner on it. I had an awkward one on mine, thats what I did.

I'm guessing it's one of the inner rear ones, near the seat belt buckle, since these are the most likely ones to seize.

A search around should bring plenty of ideas up, as it's a very common problem, but get underneath the car and clean the thread up as much as you can first. You may be able to get some molegrips on the thread under the car, just to loosen it a little, but sometimes the only way out is to grind off the bolt head (difficult as it is)

which one is it?

can't rightly remember, but do some of them protrude under the car? (mole grips if there's enough thread available)

is there enough room for an angle grinder?

i'm guessing they'll be a b*gger to drill as they're the only thing holding you into the car - probably toughened

Screw 2 13mm nuts on the bottom then use them to undo enough to cut the head off then unscrew it out the bottom of the car if it comes to it.

I got a bolt welded onto it and that did not wrk. The angle grinder did though. :(
