If your removing a hub, then you'll want to undo the shaft nut first.

Undo caliper/carrier and tie it up using cable ties or something, so its out of the way and not pulling on the brakeline.

Then undo, track rod end and split the hub from the bottom balljoint. Otherwise if you leave till the last, then the hub will flop around and probably pull your shaft out, pouring gearbox oil everywhere.

The last bit is to remove the hub from the shock, using a sump plug key inbetween the clamp (where the bolt is) twist it about 90 degrees so it stays in. This opens the clamp making it a bit easier to remove. At this point I usually get the lumpy out, and smack it till it pops off. Try and prejudge when its about to fall off though, as they are quite heavy.

Whats wrong with the hub anyway?

just seconding Alan_M  - no need to compress the spring; you can just hammer the hub off the bottom of the strut

you shouldn't need any special tools, although the hub nut is a biggie (35 or 36mm IIRC); you might need a breaker bar (or similar) to remove the hub nut as it'll likely be very tight (do this whilst the car is on the ground and the weight of the car is on the suspension), you might also need a new hub nut for reassembly (depending upon design of driveshaft - some hub nuts are retained by a R-clip, others are staked into grooves in the end of the shaft - you'll need a new nut if you've got the second type)

it's a good idea to use a new bottom balljoint bolt and nylock nut too

it's easiest to remove the disc retaining screw(s) at an early stage too - same reason as you'd remove bottom balljoint pin early on (as mentioned above)

you'll need a meaty torque wrench to get the hub nut back on too - 195lbft IIRC (it's in Haynes somewhere)

cheers all.

Alan_M the reason i need to do this is as in another post my me. the hub is cracked where the wishbone ball joint sits into. bit dangerous to be driving. so sherly of here is sending me one up....nice bloke that he is.

If you struggle separating the hub from the strut (as I did), then use a small bottle jack to prise them apart.
