Steering Rack

Recommended Posts

GazRallye

On my XS i think the steering rack could be knackered.

At a certain point on turning a right bend the steering goes vague, then all of a sudden over does the input that you've put in and then is fine beyond there.

It only really happens if you're pushing the car a little bit, ie, accelerating during a corner, or turning a corner sharply, if you're being gentle it generally seems ok.

Also it seems to wander a bit whilst accelerating and wanders to the right under hard braking.

Does this sound like a worn rack or could it be something else? It has new wishbones with bushes at the front.

Thanks

Check the wishbone-hub clamp bolts are both tight, and the hubs aren't ovalled - vague turn-in and then snatching mid-bend is a classic symptom of the above issues.

Has anyone got picture of ovalling of this part of the hub carrier? just so everyone is clear.

Mine are fine  , i'id be interested to see how pronouced the ovalling of a hub carrier is for it to cause issue.

vague turn-in and then snatching mid-bend is a classic symptom of the above issues.

thats what it does, only on right bends and it doesn't always do it. also under firm braking it veers to the right, then when you release the brakes, it straigtens up.

It really doesn't inspire confidence, which is what a 205 should be about, i'm at a loss about what it could be

Where do I look to see if the hubs are ovalled, i really don't understand this term, any help appreciated
