zowow 0 Posted June 15, 2007 (edited) thought i had it cracked and all put back together but it seemed last night that beyond 1.5k revs the clutch slips so massively i have no drive, if i feather the throttle at low speeds, she slowly accelerates but anymore the engine just revs as if i am in neutral. It's a new clutch and i've adjusted the cable from being really loose, to really tight and the bite point has got further up the pedal but it still slips, drove round the neighbourhood and it didn't improve could i have left a bolt off somewhere in the gearbox or something off the clutch cable to have caused this annoyed cause i thought it would be the maiden voyage today what would be a safe cleaner to chuck down it? when you say clutch adjustment do they just mean the cable? Richie-Van-GTi 74 2 Cars Posted June 15, 2007 sounds like the clutch is over adjusted so its not fully releasing. I find the best option is when bite point is just below half pedal travel.
zowow 0 Posted June 15, 2007 hmm, tried adjusting it every which way and it still does exactly the same :s pedal feels good, as does the bite, but as soon as you chuck revs in....
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted June 15, 2007 Have you got any end float on the cable? should have a few mm at least, How did you fix the missing bolt?
Phil H 16 Posted June 15, 2007 That sounds like it could be the release bearing is not attached to the pivot fork correctly. Very easy to knock them off when replacing the gerabox. You may be able to see through the inspection cover on the top of clutch housing. Box will need to come off to rectify though, if it is that.
zowow 0 Posted June 15, 2007 Have you got any end float on the cable? should have a few mm at least, How did you fix the missing bolt? Miles, I found the correct original bar as it was in my tub of bits n pieces... I think i've found the problem with the clutch, even though its tight and works, the cable when i try to adjust it turns, and when i press down the clutch it turns, i must be missing some sort of piece that prevents the cable from turning when i press down the clutch? StuF215 1 1 Cars Posted June 15, 2007 Did you fit the clutch? If you did the 6 bolts holding the cover onto flywheel maybe at the wrong torque setting........? Longshot. Release bearing not on right as said above? Release bearing arm not on ball joint? Why does the cable turn? Not sure what you mean. If you mean when you adjust the 13 + 10mm nuts it turns then hold it with plyers. Do you have the first mount for the cable towards the back of the box, before the adjustment part? Just shooting off ideas..... Stu

The cable should not be tight! You should have a small gap in it so it's not pressing on the bearing. Also, it shouldn't really turn when you adjust it. You just want to push/pull it (in your case, you want to push it slightly in). Try to prevent the cable from turning when adjusting the nuts, but bear in mind you should first release the locknut... Hope this helps!
zowow 0 Posted June 15, 2007 think thats my problem, the crappy cable from camberly came only with one nut for the end of the cable... the gearbox bolts are kinda just tight,,,
crogthomas 0 Posted June 15, 2007 I've had exactly the same problem in the past. Turned out to be the release bearing not sitting right as mentioned above. It was basically sitting at an angle on the fork and permanently pressing the clutch in, making it slip. Cue much swearing and re-removal of gearbox. The way to tell is that with the cable disconected the fork should waggle around loose with a little bit of play before the bearing hits the clutch. If the release bearing is causing the problem, that free play will not exsist because the bearing is jammed hard up against the clutch.
zowow 0 Posted June 15, 2007 pretty sure its the cable, theres a bit of play there...
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted June 15, 2007 There should be play there thou
