Unstable? Wonky Wheels? Naffed Rear Bushes?

Recommended Posts

Guest wingnut

Hi,

I've got a 1.9 GTi H plate that has a "quirk"...at above 65mph on certain roads with potholes, bumps, cambers (i.e. most in Britain) and sometimes even on good surfaces there is a tendancy to be a bit "wobbly". Specifically the feels light and will divert into ruts etc. It almost feels like a strong sidewind taking the car...even when there isn't one.

I've had a shifties under the front and done the usual brake tests to check if it's front suspension, brakes driveshafts or such like but nothing seems wrong. Tracking is also ok from a trusting check of letting go of the steering wheel on a nice straight flat road.

Looking on the back of the car, the Left Rear wheel seems to have a slight amount of negative camber compared to the right rear. Nothing's loose as I can see, but I've not had the car up on the jacks to have a real dig around. That said there is a bit of a squeaky knock that appears to be emanating from the back end. The wheel runs straight and true (so I'm told by the other half following me along).

So...any ideas? Sh*gged rear bushes or trailing arm perhaps? I'm a bit clueless at the moment on the rear suspension on this car and am not keen to jack it up and drop it all off in the event I naff up more than I fix! anyone come across this before? Do people mod camber for performance driving etc?

All answers on a postcard to the usual address, cheers.

Double-check the wishbone bushes at the front, these usually make for interesting handling.

Sounds like a simple knackered beam.

By the time they start showing camber and creaking I'm sure they are usually beyond rebuilding.

Interesting...

I think a free weekend and a healthy bank balance are required to resolve this...and I can see neither being available for a while! Cheers chaps, any other suggestions gratefully read!!

My 205 was doing something similar to this after I fitted 309 lower arms. I hadn't done the passenger side steering balljoint up tightly in the hub carrier and it was wobbling slightly. It had enough movement to give the car some "unstable" toe. It meant the car would pull right under acceleration and left when off the gas. Very unnerving.

droplinks

track rod ends

lazer alligment

Im yet to do anything on the back as i dont know what to change

I have quite a bit of neg camber on my rear wheels and my passenger wheel makes a squeeking noise when you wiggle it. Possible barrings?

If you do a search this is obviously your beam, it will probably be totally scrap by now.

would that make it like the wind is blowing it across the road?
