Turbo7379 3 Posted June 14, 2007 First of all DON'T drive that car until you replace it as it can snap off completely , meaning the bottom end of the strut is free to move around & you'll probably have an accident ! It's happened to me but luckily on a track car . It broke off coming into a corner leaving me no steering & I t-boned another car - he wasn't too happy either ! As for cause - the hole for the ball joint has probably got worn & ovalled . To compensate for this the balljoint clamp bolt has been over-tightened , stressing the hub & causing the crack . As for repair options , replacement is the only option . If yours is a 1.6 GTI you can use 205 td hubs , if it's a 1.9 GTI you can use 309 GTI or diesel hubs . Pugnut 9 1 Cars Posted June 14, 2007 306 gti hubs also fit a 1.9 setup . you could do with a new set of brake discs too.

Pugnut 9 1 Cars Posted June 14, 2007 could it be welded till i get a replacment you can weld the outside but it will still have a fault on the inside . it would possibly help it a bit but you must be aware that you will be knowingly driving a car that could possibly endanger you're life and lives of other road users and the general public. sorry for sounding like an old fart but tis the truth. M_R_205 5 1 Cars Posted June 14, 2007 (edited) mine cracked like that after a garage replaced the wishbones for me, the clown at the garage had blatently over tightend it ad there was shards of metal where the nut had dug in, any way dont bother welding it, to get a good weld on cast is dificult to start and the heat could crack/weaken it further, i think a new one from pug is 120 quid if i remember correctly, plus a bearing, and you will need the bearing pressed in, id recomend diging your bike out till ts sorted and for the record i didnt go back to that garage Edited June 14, 2007 by M_R_205

hengti 2 Posted June 14, 2007 take the bus or borrow the missus' car? don't want to come across all lordy - but i reckon you'd be nuts to risk using it like that; it's cracked! all you need do is hit a pot hole or whatever - and then you could be in all sorts of trouble
