Custom Brake Discs

Recommended Posts

Nathan

This isn't really a 205 question, but hopefully someone on here will be able to help me out.

I need to either find somewhere that will be able to make me a set of custom solid brake discs or alternatively I need to know what spec steel they make discs from and what if any heat treatment processes they go though so I can make my own.

Cheers

Buy some discs of your choosing that fit the stud pattern and are slightly too big. Take them to a machine shop to have them trimmed down. Job done. Very common with custom brake installs.

Not that simple, they need making to my exact design.

I have everything I would need to make them myself, bar the material spec.

I think that it will be much easier to take a standard brake disc and then machine the changes that you require, rather than make one from scratch. If you have all the tools then it should be easy for you to do the work yourself. Just find a disc that is slightly bigger in all aspects.

The chances of finding a disc that will fit my calipers, custom brake bell (with floating bobbins), uprights and then clear wishbones are slim to none and one of the reasons I have to buy in custom ones in the first place.

The only problem is where I buy them from at the mo seem to think that +/-0.5mm is an acceptable tolerance to work too.

Customs ones will be VERY expensive. As I say, if you have the ability to make your own then just buy a larger one and machine it to spec.

Considering the many thousands of cars produced in the last 20 years, I can't believe that there isn't one front or rear disc that will be suitable for maching to your spec.

They are cast for grain flow reasons, so unless you have the kit to cast one....

Can you just buy blanks of cast material then? Or does it have to be cast into the final form? Disc is only 6mm thick.

Currently paying £60 each for the ones I have made at the mo, but be would be prepared to pay more as I have to re-machine them when they arrive anyway.
