Odd Hestitation On Change Of Afm

Recommended Posts

pugbliss

Hi all

I thought id have a look at my engine to see what is making it run sluggish (this is after a full service and timing set) i double checked the spark plugs, leads and dizzy cap and all is well, i then looked at the afm to find i had a wrong code ending in 003 so i got another (056) off ebay and it arrived in a desent state...so i fitted it.

The car now starts fine but upon driving i get a very hesitant drive in all gear and revs. what has gone wrong??????? could i have bough a duff afm or what..... my old afm (033) on the car was smooth but lacked any real power below 3 thou revs....

any help appriciated

What is the car ?

As far as i know on mi16 and 1,9 8v AFM are all the same. I can check bosch code on mine (i got 2) and tell you the number. the 1,6 AFM is different (as i read somewhere).

It could be the new AFM is sticky - i.e. the flap door doesnt open good or its potentiometer is f***ed/dirty, so doesnt send good info to ECU.

Have you had the car on a Co machine as all afms are set different as they are used on different engines so it could be running lean or rich, its not just a case of pluging a different afm on.

mi16 and 1.9 airflow meters aren't the same in the UK unless the 1.9 is a later motronic catalyst equipped car

If it's 0280202033 then it is used on quite a few vauxhalls (Astra GTE etc).

056 is the right number for 1.6 and 109 for 1.9 IIRC

so why would fitting the correct afm mess up the performance so much??

You can't exclude the possibility that the AFM has been tampered with in the past. Just try giving it a refurb and setting it up with a gas analyser.

It could also be fecked I suppose as so many of them are...

Forgot to add... it sounds like it's running lean, i.e the spring inside is too tight. Loosen it off a bit (3 - 4 clicks) and see how it feels then. If it's OK, check the colour of the plus after a run and make sure it's not running lean or too rich and away you go.

It's like anything - one or so companies make them so can pretty much charge the earth. All they are is a potentiometer at the end of the day.
