Hissing Sound!

Recommended Posts

Timmer205

Hey

I stripped my car out a while ago, i.e no rear seats, no underlay or carpets. Every so often i can hear like a hising sound from the back (doesnt happen every time but its been alarmingly loud recently).

Do all stripped out pugs have this or is it a fuel tank or exhaust problem?

Please let me know as i'm kinda paranoid about it!.

Cheers

Timmer

I suspect this is nothing more than your fuel pump occasionally drawing air when cornering with the fuel level running low and uncovering its intake.

If you can't smell any petrol then don't worry.

It could also be the tank occasionally venting to equalise pressure.

It is amazing what you can hear in a stripped-out car. In a stripped out Xantia once the sound of diesel sloshing around the tank was quite a surprise.

I heard a hissing sound from mine the other day. It was coming from the petrol filler cap. Does this mean that I've got a blocked breather on the fuel system? Are they vented at all or is it a sealed system?

Yes they are Josh, there is a second pipe that runs up the side of the main filler pipe, this is the breather/vent. Worth checking.

The tank cap rarely fits well and could well be the source.

Thanks Jim :) So can I assume that the hissing that I heard was actually a vacuum in the tank due to the amount of fuel that I had used? I'll check the breather hose to make sure that it isn't blocked.
